Sony Launches Live TV on PS5 With 100+ Free Channels

Seven years after shuttering the paid PlayStation Vue subscription service, Sony is re-entering the living room broadcast market with a completely different playbook. The company has rolled out Live TV on PS5, a free ad-supported streaming television (FAST) platform built directly into the PlayStation 5 interface. Rather than forcing players to download a standalone app from the media hub, Sony has integrated more than 100 live channels right into the console’s main Media section.

What is Included in the FAST Lineup?

The service relies on content partnerships across major media houses, including Amazon MGM Studios, Fox, NBCUniversal, and the UFC. Viewers tuning in will find a traditional cable-style channel guide overlaid on video streams that begin playing automatically in the background as soon as the interface opens.

The programming breakdown spans several categories:

Live TV on PS5
  • Movies: Dedicated hubs like MovieSphere by Lionsgate, 50 Cent Action, FilmRise Free Movies, Sony One Horror Hits, and Cinevault.
  • Classic and Cable TV Shows: Syndicated favorites such as The Walking Dead, Community, The Shield, Hell’s Kitchen, Unsolved Mysteries, Deal or No Deal USA, and Fear Factor.
  • Anime: Heavy representation from Crunchyroll, featuring dedicated blocks and box sets for series like Naruto, Sailor Moon, Hunter x Hunter, Black Clover, and Death Note.
  • Live Sports and News: Coverage from FOX Sports, NASCAR, NBC Sports Now, and the UFC, alongside news broadcasts from NBC News Now, Fox Weather, and LiveNOW from FOX.
  • Creator Content: Digital-first programming including YouTube hits like Hot Ones and audio-visual podcasts from The Ringer, alongside esports and gaming retrospectives.

Monetization and Strategic Shift for Sony

This move follows a broader industry trend where rising subscription costs for services like Netflix and Disney+ have pushed viewers back toward linear, ad-supported television formats over IP. For Sony, the timing is deeply intertwined with its current hardware strategy. With memory crises, rising manufacturing overhead, and executive focus shifting toward profitability over raw hardware sales expansion, capturing user attention within the PlayStation ecosystem has become a high-priority revenue stream.

By keeping players inside a native PlayStation interface instead of routing them to competing FAST apps like Tubi or Pluto TV, Sony retains viewer eyeballs and collects valuable ad impressions.

However, the rollout arrives alongside notable friction with the core gaming community. The feature debuts while users are actively navigating controversies surrounding the depreciation of physical game discs and licensing expirations that stripped European users of previously purchased digital movie libraries. Critics have noted that pushing a TV-first entertainment hub risks echoing Microsoft’s ill-fated Xbox One pivot, though Sony’s execution here sidesteps the need for external hardware integration by leveraging the console’s existing dashboard architecture.

Regional Rollout and Bravia Integration

At launch, Live TV on PS5 is restricted to the United States. Users can access it by navigating to the Media tab on the console home screen, selecting the Live TV icon, and signing in with a standard PlayStation Network account. Sony has confirmed plans to expand the service to Canada next, with additional international markets under review. Furthermore, Sony has verified that the interface and channel guide will roll out to compatible Bravia smart TVs later in the year, cementing a unified software ecosystem across its consumer electronics portfolio.
